Omega Air Press Release – 12 June 2008 – Immediate Release

Omega Tankers successfully refueled 9 RAF Tornados during a 2000 nm transit across the USA for RAF Exercise Torpedo Focus on 30th April and 1st May.

The Tornados of No 12 and 31 Squadrons were the first RAF aircraft to use Omega Tanker.  The ‘trail’ was completed in 3 stages – an Omega KC-707 with 2 Tornados and a  KDC-10 with 4 Tornados on day one; followed by the KDC-10 with the final 3 Tornados on day two.

All three missions were carried out between 22000-24000 ft at speeds between 270-300 kts.  Each Tornado refueled twice during the 2000 nm transit taking a total of 18000 lbs of fuel each.

Squadron ground-crew and some 5 tonnes of equipment were also transported on the KDC-10.

Omega founders/owners Ulick and Des McEvaddy said in a joint statement:  “This is an extremely proud day for Omega.  The RAF is rightly regarded as the finest air force in the world, and it is a great privilege to be working with them”

Omega KC-707 tankers have been in service with the US Navy since 2000, transferring over 91 million lbs of fuel to the full range of Navy fast-jet aircraft.  Omega’s new KDC-10 tanker entered service on this contract in March 2008, just weeks before being used for this RAF trail.

The USN contract is operated by Omega Air Refueling Services Inc as a fee-for-service facility – see  RAF use was arranged under a standing Foreign Military Sales bi-lateral agreement between UK and the US.

Omega’s KDC-10 is fitted with the latest FRL 900 series wing pods (same pods destined for FSTA A-330) and can offload up to 180,000 lbs at an operating range of 1000 nm, more than any other comparable tanker (including A-330).  Omega KC-707 fitted with twin centre-line Hose and Drogue Units is capable of off-loading up to 100,000 lbs of fuel at 1000 nm range.
